Serum Resistin and Glucose Among Obese and Non-Obese Diabetic Rats

The role of resistin in response to obesity in T2DM patients is still obscure. The aim of this was to evaluate serum resistin and lipid profiles in obese and non-obese diabetic rats. Obesity was induced by the administration of high-fat diet (HFD) for 35 days, while DM was induced by injecting 150 mg/kg body weight of alloxan monohydrate into the rats. Serum resistin was assayed using the ELISA technique, serum glucose, TC, HDL - C, and TG using spectrophotometric techniques. The results of body weight and BMI were significantly higher (P<0.05) in HFD-fed groups compared with those of control. Serum resistin results show no significant difference (P > 0.05) in all the study groups but show a positive correlation (P > 0.05) with BMI in all the experimental groups. The results of TC, TG, LDL-C, and VLDL-C were significantly higher (P<0.05), while HDL-C was significantly lower (P<0.05) in the obese and diabetic groups compared with the control. In conclusion, the findings of this study show that a relationship exists between serum resistin and BMI. Dyslipidemia is associated with obesity.
