Assessment of Electrolytes Distribution In P-407 Induced-Hyperlipidaemic Wistar Rats Treated with Fenugreek Seed Supplements
Abstract
High fat diet (HFD) contribute to the advent of health problems. Recent studies have indicated that obesity imposes a hemodynamic overload to the kidneys. In Hyperlipidemia associated with cardiovascular disorders leading to increased morbidity among individuals is alarming. Challenges or adverse effect of certain antihyperlipidaemic drugs (statins, fibrates, bile acid sequestrant and cholesterol absorption inhibitors), their high cost and unavailable to the population at grass root. There is need to search for an alternative remedy with lesser side effect and more accessible among masses. Twenty (20) Wistar rats were divided in four groups n=5,
hyperlipidaemia was induced using a single dose of P407 (1.5g/Kg) IP at the interval of three days. Group 1 served as the normal control, group 2 served as disease control (hyperlipidemic rats placed on normal diet), group 3 comprises of hyperlipidemic rats placed on Cholestyramine (0.26g/Kg) and group 4 comprises of hyperlipidemic rats placed on fenugreek seed supplement (2.5%), after three weeks of treatment blood sample were collected via cardiac puncture from which serum was used for assessment of electrolytes, creatinine and urea using standard procedures. Results indicate a significant decrease in creatinine levels in the supplement treated
group compared to the disease control group. This indicates reversal of altered creatinine over excretion and a sign of a better performing renal functions. Fenugreek seed supplements have a protective effect on renal tissue integrated function. With further studies a specific dose may be fine-tuned for human consumption.
