Abstract

Spontaneous abortion or miscarriage is a global public health problem and the commonest complication of pregnancy that occurs in 10% to 15% of clinically recognizable pregnancies. A case control study was undertaken to evaluate the role of oxidative stress
among women with miscarriage. Forty-five (45) women with spontaneous abortion as case and women without any history of miscarriage as control were enrolled in to study. Biomarkers of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde and total antioxidant capacity) were
estimated using chemical method. The result showed that the mean and standard deviation of mean of malondialdehyde concentrations of the cases and controls were 2.2 ± 0.3 (nmol/mL) and 1.6 ±0.2 (nmol/mL) respectively. The concentration of MDA was higher in the cases compared to the controls but not significant (p=0.2057). The mean and standard deviation of concentration of the antioxidant capacity in the cases and controls group were 1586 ±185 and 2412 ±252 (µmol/L) respectively (p= 0.0098). The outcome of this study provides further proven evidence of the effect of oxidative stress on Spontaneous abortion.
