Antibiogram of Staphylococcus Aureus and Escherichia Coli Isolated from Beef and Aprons of Beef Vendors in Abraka and Obiaruku, Delta State, Nigeria.

Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus constitute part of the causes of food and water borne diseases in humans. This study was designed to investigate the presence of microbes in beef and aprons of Beef Vendors in Abraka and Obiaruku, Delta State, Nigeria and to determine its antimicrobial susceptibility to common antimicrobial agents. A total of one hundred (100) samples of beef specimen were obtained. Fifty samples meat (1g) were collected from different abattoir located in Abraka and 50 samples from apron of vendors
working in the abattoirs was also collected using sterile swab stick. Bacteria were isolated via selective cultural procedures and biochemical tests were carried out to confirm the presence of isolates from the 100 samples analyzed. Staphylococcus 48(48 %) was found to be most frequent isolated organisms, followed by the Proteus vulgarius 11(11%) and Escherichia coli 1(1 %). In this study, varying level of resistance of S, aureus to antimicrobial agent was observed; 0.4% to Ceftriazone, 90% to Amoxicillin, 83% to, Ampiclox, 83% to Chloramphenicol respectively with the maximum resistance to Amoxicillin and E. coli having resistance to Amoxicillin, Ampiclox and Chloramphenicol but susceptible to Ceftriazone. Identification of multidrug resistant bacteria, such as E. coli, and S. aureus from meat and apron of meat vendors poses considerable risk on the consumers. Therefore, there is need to implement good hygienic practices among the food handlers.
