Dyslipidaemia and Albumin Levels in Male Subjects with Prostate Disorders

Abstract

Prostate cancer accounts for 11% of all male cancers in Nigeria and its increasing prevalence among men in their early 50’s has become a public health concern. This present study determined dyslipidaemia and albumin levels in Prostate disorders. A total of 139 human subjects were randomly recruited for the study from the Urology Unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Subjects were grouped into benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer subjects (on drug and without drug therapy). Blood samples obtained from subjects were used to assess lipid profiles (LP), Albumin and prostate specific antigen (PSA) using ELISA and spectrophotometry method. Results revealed higher mean level of LP [total cholesterol (203.44±37.54), triglyceride (115.24±37.45), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (43.96±9.45), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (135.68±39.70) and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (23.04±7.50)] in prostate cancer subjects when compared with control subjects. Significantly lower mean level of Albumin (27.47±3.60) and higher mean level of PSA (32.26±26.44) were observed in prostate cancer subjects when compared with controls. Dyslipidaemia is associated with prostate cancer and could be a consequence of its progression, the lower level of albumin could be used as a prognostic factor in monitoring metabolic stability in these subjects.
